Google has from today been offering a number of additional search options to help users find the result they're looking for.
Today, if you go to the Google search page you can search as normal, but there is a 'Show Options' button at the top of the results page which allows you to filter the results. You can choose to filter the results by type (videos, forum posts, reviews) or by recency (most recent, past 24 hours, past week, past year). You can easily view the images that are on the ranked pages, there's a Timeline so that you can see how mentions of the phrase are affected by time, and there's a Wonder Wheel which seems to show related search phrases on a mind map.
All of this means that Google is providing new tools to help users narrow down search results, some of which are helping them to monitor the real-time web.
So, what does this mean for website owners? It means that if you have the ability to add video to your site, or to host a forum, or images, then adding these will help you to show up in the narrowed-down Google searches.
Of course, you'll need to make sure that your images, videos and other resources are appropriately tagged, to help Google understand their relevance to the search term.
If you update your site frequently, this will help you in the searches that focus on recency.
But as before, relevance of content is still vital. So keep making sure that you are writing content that is relevant to the search terms you want to be found for, and labeling (or tagging) it to help Google identify it.
